While some of my more pessimistic friends out there may believe there is nothing we can do to combat the HIV/AIDS problem I do not concur. There are numerous ways that you-yes you, the very person who is reading this right now- can fight this battle. It all just depends on how much time and effort you're willing to put in.

*Know your status*
Many people who HIV aren't even aware they're infected. Many student health services will offer free HIV/AIDS testing. In addition, various local hospitals and clinics are able to offer free/low-cost testing. Find a testing site here: http://www.hivtest.org/subindex.cfm?FuseAction=Locate

*Safety First*
You're mom always told you to look both ways before crossing the street right? Extend the same common sense to other areas of your life by protecting yourself and your partner(s). You can get an overview of HIV prevention here: http://www.avert.org/hivprevention.htm

*Get Educated*
Do you know all of the ways HIV can transmitted? Do you know how the AIDS virus affects the human population? Do you know what populations are at higher risk for contracting HIV? Get informed on the various HIV/AIDS related issues. The US Center for Disease Control is a good place to start: http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/dhap.htm . for an overview on global HIV/AIDS issues you can go to: http://hrw.org/doc/?t=hivaids_pub or http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/fxbcenter/HIVAIDS_and_HRinNutshell-Webversion1.pdf

*Stand in Solidarity*
Support the movement by attending local events. Or perhaps participate in an AIDS walk. You can also urge extra funding for HIV/AIDS initatives and call on governments to provide comprehensive HIV/AIDS services.

*Going the extra mile*
-Get involved with HIV/AIDS charities/organizations (http://www.thebody.com/hotlines/internat.html)
-Help to educate others
